Conformateur

A conformateur, often referred to as a conformer, is a specialized hat-making instrument used to capture the size and shape of a person’s head. Unlike a simple circumference measurement taken with a tape measure, a conformateur records variations in the head’s profile, providing information about head oval, asymmetry, and other characteristics that can affect the fit of a finished hat.

What a Conformateur Does

The conformateur allows a hatter to record more than the circumference of a customer’s head. When properly positioned and adjusted, its measuring fingers follow the contours of the head and transfer those variations to a reduced-size paper pattern.

This pattern provides a representation of the head’s horizontal shape, revealing whether the wearer has a relatively regular oval, long oval, round oval, or an irregular or asymmetrical head shape. Two people with the same measured head circumference may therefore require differently shaped hats for a comfortable and secure fit.

The information recorded by the conformateur can be used when selecting or shaping hat blocks, evaluating fit, and making adjustments during construction or renovation. Traditionally, the resulting pattern may also be used with a formillion, a companion device that reproduces the recorded head shape for use in fitting and shaping work.

How a Conformateur Works

A traditional conformateur uses a series of movable measuring fingers arranged around a frame that is placed on the wearer’s head. As the instrument is positioned, the fingers move independently to follow the contours of the head.

Once the conformateur is correctly positioned, its mechanism records the relative positions of those measuring fingers onto a paper card or pattern. The resulting outline is a reduced-scale representation of the wearer’s head shape rather than simply a circumference measurement.

The accuracy of the recorded profile depends upon the relationship between the instrument and the wearer’s head. For this reason, conformateurs are designed to reproduce measurements in a consistent and repeatable manner, allowing the recorded profile to serve as a reliable basis for subsequent fitting and comparison. Head Shape & Hat Fit

Head circumference alone does not fully describe how a hat will fit. Two people can have nearly identical circumference measurements while having noticeably different head shapes, including differences in front-to-back length, side-to-side width, and asymmetry.

These differences are commonly described using terms such as regular oval, long oval, and round oval, although an individual head may not fit neatly into a standard category. A conformateur provides a more detailed representation of the wearer’s actual shape and can reveal variations that may otherwise become apparent only after a hat is worn.

Understanding head shape can help the hatter select an appropriate block, evaluate how the crown and sweatband will fit the wearer, and determine whether additional fitting adjustments may be necessary. The conformateur therefore supplements rather than replaces a conventional circumference measurement.

The Conformateur & Formillion

The conformateur and formillion are complementary tools, but they perform different functions. The conformateur records the shape of the wearer’s head; the formillion uses that recorded information to reproduce the head shape for fitting and block-related work.

In a traditional system, the reduced-scale pattern produced by the conformateur is transferred to the formillion. The formillion is adjusted to match that pattern, creating a full-size representation of the recorded head shape that can then be compared with a hat, hat block, or other fitting form.

Used together, the two instruments create a workflow from the wearer’s actual head shape to the forms used during hat making. The conformateur captures the information, while the formillion provides a means of applying that information during fitting and construction.

Conformateurs & Band Blocks

A head profile recorded with a conformateur can also be used to create a custom band block, a solid form representing the wearer’s individual head shape at the hat line. A band block provides a permanent full-size representation of that profile that can be retained for future fitting work or used inside the finished hat during storage to help preserve its custom fit.

With a traditional conformateur system, the conformateur records the head at reduced scale rather than providing a directly traceable full-size profile. The reduced paper pattern can be retained as a compact customer record and later transferred to a formillion, which recreates the head shape at full size. The exterior profile of the adjusted formillion can then provide the pattern for making a custom band block.

Some modern full-size conformers provide another option. Because their adjustable elements capture the wearer’s head shape at actual size, the instrument’s inner profile may be traced directly to create the pattern for a custom band block. This allows a band block to be produced without first transferring the measurement to a formillion, while the formillion remains useful as a separate adjustable working representation of the wearer’s head shape.

Conformateurs & Hat Blocks

A conformateur does not directly shape a hat or modify a hat block. Instead, it provides information about the wearer’s head shape that can help the hatter evaluate whether a particular block is appropriate for the intended fit.

Comparing the recorded head shape with the shape represented by a hat block can reveal differences in oval, width, length, or localized irregularities. That information may influence block selection or indicate that fitting adjustments or block modification should be considered.

The goal is not necessarily to make the block an exact duplicate of every contour of the wearer’s head. Rather, the conformateur provides additional information that the hatter can interpret when determining how the hat should be blocked, constructed, and fitted.

Limitations & Accuracy

A conformateur is capable of recording information that a circumference measurement alone cannot provide, but the usefulness of that information depends upon both the instrument and the quality of the recorded measurement. The precision of the mechanism, the consistency of its operation, and the method by which the resulting profile is interpreted all influence its value as a fitting tool.

Repeatability is an important characteristic of any conformateur. A well-designed instrument should consistently reproduce substantially the same head profile when measuring the same individual under comparable conditions. For this reason, a conformateur is best understood as a precision measuring instrument rather than an automatic guarantee of a perfectly fitted hat.

Modern reproductions and 3D-printed conformateurs have made this form of measurement more accessible, but their performance depends upon their individual design and construction. Differences in materials, manufacturing methods, rigidity, and measuring mechanisms may influence how closely they reproduce the capabilities of traditional professional instruments.

Using a Conformateur

A conformateur is employed during the fitting process to record the horizontal profile of the wearer’s head before hat construction or evaluation begins. The information it captures may subsequently be used in block selection, custom fitting, comparison with existing hats, or reproduction of the recorded head shape through companion tools such as the formillion or a custom band block.

Although the purpose of the instrument remains consistent, the methods used to position the conformateur, capture the measurement, record the profile, and interpret the resulting information vary according to the design of the instrument and the hatter’s preferred working practice. Workshop Notes

In July 2026, The Workshop Ledger acquired the printed components for a 3D-printed conformateur as the workshop’s first head-shape measuring instrument. The components were produced through Craftcloud in black PETG at 40% infill from community-shared 3D model files. The printed components cost $49.00 including shipping; this amount does not include the additional hardware required for assembly.

The conformateur consists of a printed halo and multiple movable measuring fingers. At the time of printing, one finger was specifically requested in red rather than black to provide a permanent visual reference for the exact front-center position of the instrument. This reference should help establish consistent orientation when measurements are taken and repeated.

Because this design differs from a traditional mechanical conformateur, its accuracy and usefulness will not be assumed. After assembly, the instrument will be evaluated for rigidity, consistent finger movement and locking, positioning, and repeatability. Multiple independent measurements of the same head will be compared to determine whether the tool can reliably reproduce the same profile.

Initial testing will use a known head circumference of approximately 60.5 cm. The captured profile will be evaluated for head oval and asymmetry and compared with the workshop’s 61 cm open crown hat block. Future work will also investigate integration with a 3D-printed formillion, with the goal of developing and documenting a repeatable fitting workflow from head measurement through block evaluation. Results will be added as the conformateur is assembled, calibrated, and put into practical use.
